2019 NFL Draft updates & liveblog — Day 3

Today’s the final day of the NFL Draft, and so far only three guys have had their names called. Sean Bunting of Central Michigan was picked 39th overall by Tampa Bay, Northern Illinois’ Max Scharping 55th to Houston, and Pittsburgh landed Toledo’s Diontae Johnson with the 66th pick.

I’ll be making updates on this thread as picks are made during Day 3. And same deal as yesterday’s liveblog and Day 1’s, a list of available MAC players will be beneath the liveblog, then the round-by-round results will be constantly updated beneath that. After the draft, I’ll have a separate post to help track all the undrafted free agents & whatnot.

LIVEBLOG

11:00 a.m.: Alright, almost time to get this thing going again. Whose name will be called next?

My money’s on Maxx Crosby; but I’m also a dumb person so maybe you should bet against me and make some coin.

Woody Barrett, Kent State’s quarterback, looks as motivated of everybody else who wants to hear their names called in a future draft.

12:01 p.m.: Alright enough talk already! Somebody just pick Maxx right now.

12:11: Hakeem Butler is FINALLY off the board to leadoff the fourth round for Arizona. It’s about damn time he got picked.

Also, the sooner Butler was taken, the sooner Cody Thompson can have his name heard — at least that’s what my line of thinking is. Shoot, maybe Arizona’s eyeing him for a later pick, too.

12:15: Ryan Finley, the quarterback from NC State, is the second pick of today. Tyree Jackson is obviously the MAC guy to watch in this position, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Jarrett Stidham of Auburn had his name called before Jackson does. Maybe even North Dakota State’s Easton Stick, to throw his name in the mix.

12:22: Maxx Crosby is off the board! with the 106th pick in the draft, the Raiders take EMU’s stud EDGE rusher.

With the pick, Crosby is the seventh EMU player taken in the draft since the turn of the century. He is also the earliest-picked player in the draft since T.J. Lang was the 109th pick of the 2009 draft by Green Bay.

He is the first true Chris Creighton recruit to be drafted. Darius Jackson was a sixth-round pick in 2016 and Pat O’Connor was a seventh rounder in 2017. Both of them were recruited to Ron English-led teams out of high school.

1:08: Not MACtion, but BENNY SNELL IS OFF THE BOARD FINALLY AT 122.

1:24: The Oakland Raiders have taken 13 MAC players ever, with Maxx Crosby being the latest. All but one are defensive players. The offensive guy, WR Clarence Chapman from EMU in 1976.

The other Oakland-MAC draft picks:

  • 1971, BGSU LB Phil Villapiano (45)
  • 1971, CMU DB Mick natzel (334)
  • 1976, Kent State DB Cedric Brown (343)
  • 1978, Ball State DB Maurice Harvey (86)
  • 1979, BGSU DB Dirk Abernathy (316)
  • 1999, Miami LB JoJuan Armour (224)
  • 2008, Buffalo DE Trevor Scott (169)
  • 2009, Ohio DB Mike Mitchell (47)
  • 2014, Buffalo LB Khalil Mack (5)
  • 2014, Ohio DB T.J. Carrie (219)
  • 2017, Toledo DT Treyvon Hester (244)

1:35: Jarrett Stidham is off the board, going to New England at 133. Plenty of draft to go, and you, fan of Tyree Jackson, should not be worried if Easton Stick gets picked first. The Stidham pick was just the first shoe to drop.

2:36: Still sitting at four MAC players taken through 156 picks. We’re currently in the middle of the fifth. If the MAC’s going to get to nine picks (which, the talent is still certainly there), then there should be a run sooner or later with Tyree Jackson, Anthony Johnson, Cody Thompson, Jon’Vea Johnson, Xavier Crawford and Jamal Davis all still out there and perfectly draftable. Doubtful that they all will, but at least most of them ought to be picked before udrafted free agency opens.

3:03: Easton Stick and Clatyton Thorson go off the board in back-to-back QB picks at 166 and 167, respectively.

Tyree’s still waiting for that phone call.

3:22: Round five is a wrap, and no MAC players had their names called. Tyree Jackson did see two quarterbacks, Easton Stick and Clayton Thorson, get picked back-to-back not too long ago though. Sooner or later, these guys will have jobs.

3:24: BAM! Sutton Smith is going to the Steelers, just like everybody predicted.

Smith is the second MAC guy taken by Pittsburgh in this draft with Diontae Johnson of Toledo picked in the third round.

With Max Scharping and Sutton Smith both drafted, NIU’s now had two players taken in the same draft for the first time since 2014 when S Jimmie Ward (30) and DT Ken Bishop (251) were taken by the 49ers and Cowboys, respectively.

3:35: Another quarterback, Gardner Minshew from Washington State, got picked. That’s 10 QBs off the board with Tyree Jackson still available.

3:45: Ka’Dar Hollman has been drafted!

Green Bay takes the former walk-on-turned-3-year-starter with the 185th pick of the draft. The last time Green Bay took a MAC player in the draft was in 2015 when hooper-turned-corner Quinten Rollins of Miami was drafted in the second round (62) after one season.

4:06: Lol

4:15: MAC player number seven taken in the draft: CMU’s Xavier Crawford. Aka the other really good Central Michigan corner.

4:42: For the third time this draft, the Steelers took a MAC player.

The latest: linebacker Ulysees Gilbert III of Akron, who never missed a game in his collegiate career.

4:46: Back-to-back MAC picks. After Ulysees Gilbert was taken by Pittsburgh, Tampa Bay went back to the MAC for Scott Miller of Bowling Green.
