MAC media picks NIU, Ohio in title game

Now that Mid-American Conference Media Day is finally here, it’s time for everybody’s favorite topic of discussion: the preseason media poll. With 21 and 15 first-place votes respectively, Ohio was picked to win the MAC East division and Northern Illinois is the slight favorite to win the West.

The complete results:

MAC East 1st place votes Points MAC West 1st place votes Points
Ohio 21 140 Northern Illinois 15 133
Buffalo 1 112 Toledo 7 125
Miami 2 95 Western Michigan 1 87
Akron 74
Eastern MIchigan
67
Bowling Green 58 Central MIchigan 1 58
Kent State 25 Ball State 34

2018 MAC Championship Game Winner: Ohio (13); Toledo (5); Northern Illinois (4); Miami (1); Central Michigan (1).

My picks from last week were not included in the MAC’s collection of media votes.

Ohio’s the heavier favorite out of the East with 140 points over Buffalo at 112 (one first-place vote) and Miami with 95 (2). Akron, was the East’s representative in the MAC championship game, is picked to finish fourth in the division with 74 points, followed by Bowling Green and Kent State.

It’s still a struggle between NIU and Toledo for the West, but the media likes NIU and so do I. NIU has 15 first-place votes while Toledo has seven and are separated by eight total points, which means most see these two teams as the juggernauts of the West as per usual. Western Michigan’s picked to finish third with one vote for a championship game appearance with 87 points followed by Eastern Michigan with 67 points, then Central Michigan 58 and Ball State at 34. And, of course, CMU has one first-place vote from the pool of media members because CMU always gets one first-place vote from the pool of media members.
